Asking For and Receiving Community Help

  • Are There Slow Days and Times When It Is Best To Visit?
  • Make An Appointment and Arrive Fifteen Minutes Early.
  • Ask What Records You Need to Bring, and Bring Them All.
  • Most Agencies Require A Photo ID and Your Social Security Number.
  • Most Agencies Require Proof of Income and Residence.
  • Social Security Often Requires Employment and Medical History.
  • Keep All This Information On Lists And Bring A Copy With You.
  • Speak Up and Answer Questions Directly Staying On Point.
  • Treat The Staff With Respect Even If They Are Tired And Rude.
  • When You Disagree Keep Your Voice Level, And Do Not Call Names or Make Threats.
  • If Necessary Ask For A Supervisor Or The Grievance Process.
  • Write Down What The Worker Tells You.
  • Follow Up Quickly On Whatever The Agency Asks You To Do.
  • Check Back If You Do Not Hear From The Agency When Promised.

How wonderful when we are able to help others!
How reassuring when we need help and it is there!
How sad when there is help but we do not ask!
